The New York Yankees
Otherwise referred to as the “Yanks”, the New York Yankees are located in the Bronx of New York City and compete in the MLB in the American League's East Division. The team was originally founded in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland as the Baltimore Orioles. They moved to New York City in 1903 and changed their name to the New York Highlanders. While in Baltimore, they played at the Oriole Park but with their move to New York, they had a stadium built for them which they soon after named Hilltop Park. It wasn't until 1923 when they switched over to playing at the first Yankee Stadium for about 50 years, moved back to Shea Stadium for about a year, then went back to the first yankee Stadium. They were there until 2009 when a newly built Yankee Stadium became their permanent home. Their team colors are navy blue, white, and gray and their logo is the letters “N” and “Y” overlapping each other in stylized lettering. The Yankees hold the MLB record for winning 18 division titles, 40 American League pennants, and 27 World Series championships.
It is because of their success and talent as a team that the Yankees have such a large fan base, as well as one of the biggest rivalries in the MLB with the Boston Red Sox, which has been going on for more than 100 years. The competition really began to heat up when in 1991, the Red Sox sold their star player, Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees and after that trade, the Red Sox didn't win a single game for the next 86 years. Ever since then, they Yankees and Red Sox have had a fueling rivalry, known to be one of the “greatest rivalry in all of sports.” In the mid 1960's, however, the Yankees slowly declined for about a decade. It wasn't until 1976 where they won 3 consecutive pennants and won the world series for the next two years. The Yankees made an appearance in the playoffs every season from 1995-2008 as well as 5 more World Series championships. Their last World Series championship was in 2009, however with being such a successful team, the fans have no doubt that the Yankees could make it to the playoffs once again.
