How did the New York Islanders begin?  The World Hockey Association started its games in 1972 and planned to house its New York team in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.  However, Nassau County officials did not think too highly of the WHA, nor the New York Raiders for that matter.  That meant that the only way to keep the Raiders out of the arena was to place an NHL team at that venue.  Thus, officials and big-name people met on the matter and quickly awarded a Long Island based franchise.  To everyone’s surprise, the team was named the Islanders instead of the Ducks!

Another history-making event occurred in November of 2007 when Al Arbour returned to coach game #1500 for the Islanders at the request of Ted Nolan, who also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who wanted Arbour to hit that grand number.  This New York Islanders ticket proved good—the franchise won and Coach Arbor’s record was lengthened to dual perfect numbers—game #1500 and the NHL record of 740 regular wins with one franchise.  What about a New York Islanders ticket in 2008?  Their chances look good, as Long Islanders are a fighting bunch.  Perhaps the best seasons are to come.
