The Cubs

Being one of the oldest active teams in professional sports, the Chicago Cubs are based in Chicago, Illinois and are members of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's National League and are of the two remaining charter members of the National League, along with the Atlanta Braves. Their uniform colors are red, white, and blue and their logo is a big letter “C” with a cub crawling through it. They played their first game in 1870 as the Chicago White Stockings, their original name, with the National Association of Baseball Players where they won the league's championship and continued with that League for another 5 seasons. In 1903, their name became the Chicago Cubs and in 1916, the team acquired Wrigley Field to become their home field. They got their name, the Chicago Cubs, because of the large amount of young players on their team and eventually, their nickname stuck. Aside from the White Stockings, the Cubs are known by other nicknames such as The Cubbies, the North Siders, the Boys in Blue, and the Loveable Losers. They are referred to as the Lovable Losers because they haven't been able to win the World Series in 104 years, having the longest championship drought of any major North American sports team.

The team is owned by Thomas Ricketts who succeeded the previous owner, Chicago Tribune. He is the son of Joe Ricketts who founded TD Ameritrade. It was in 2009 that the Ricketts family had an interest in the Cubs, which is where they ended the Tribune’s management. The same year marked a year of many injuries for the Cubs and they only fielded their Opening Day lineup of men for three games that entire season. However with the multiple injuries to the team, they were still able to post a winning season for the third season in a row, the first time they have been able to do so since the early 1970’s. Near the end of the year in November of 2013, the Cubs hired the Padres bench coach Rick Renteria to be their next manager. With his contract, the team could keep him until the 2018 season. Another addition to the team is left-hander Ted Lilly who is a member of the Cubs’ last two National League champions. He has signed on to be a special assistant to the President of the team, Theo Epstein, and general manager Jed Hoyer; a helping hand when needed. Both the team and their devoted fans are cheering for the Cubs to hopefully lose their Loveable Losers nickname and bring home a World Series championship this season.
