Detroit Red Wings

Holding the record for the most Stanley Cup championships of any NHL franchise in the USA, the Detroit Red Wings are members of Division C of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. They are based in Detroit, Michigan and play their home games at Joe Louis Arena after playing in the Olympia Stadium which was their home for more than 40 years. The Red Wings are one of the Original Six teams of the NHL and are currently one of the more popular franchises in the NHL. Their hometown of Detroit and its surrounding areas are commonly referred to as “Hockeytown” because of their fan base and popularity. As of 2011, the Red Wings have the highest number of Stanley Cup championships in the USA and third overall in the NHL. In 1926, the Detroit group was awarded an NHL franchise and were then known as the Detroit Cougars, but played their home games in Windsor, Ontario. They moved to Detroit the following season where they also hired Jack Adams as both their head coach and general manager for the next 36 years. The Cougars, as they were then called, won their first appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1929 where they were defeated by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The following year, they changed their name to the Falcons, however, their performance on the ice declined as they would finish near the bottom of the standings until 1932 when they made their second playoff appearance. It was in the same year that James Norris bought the team and changed their name one final time to the Red Wings. A few years later in 1936, the team won their first Stanley Cup and continued on their streak and won it for the second time in 1937.

In the 1940's, the Wings made the Stanley Cup finals three times and made the playoffs every year. Gordie Howe, known to be one of the best players in the NHL, joined the team and by his second season with the Wings, was paired with Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay to form the “Production Line,” known to be one of the greatest lines in history. He led the team to four Stanley Cup wins and by the 1970-1971 season, he retired after sustaining multiple injuries, including a chronic wrist problem. With the retirement of one of their key players, the Wings declined into a period known as the “dead wings” era. Most of their downfall was due to Adams decision to draft players as young as 16 as well as hiring Ned Harkness as their new coach who was then promoted to be general manager of the team. By the early 1980's, the team was sold to Mike Ilitch, after 50 years of being owned by the Norris family. Through the 1990's and 2000's, the Red Wings slowly improved as they drafted prominent players such as Vladimir Konstantinov and Sergei Fedorov who helped up make the Russian Five. In 2005, Mike Babcock was named new head coach of the wings and the following season, Nicklas Lidstrom was appointed team captain. He helped the team get a Stanley Cup championship the following season and by 2012, he retired after nearly 20 years in the NHL. He was succeeded by fellow teammate Henrik Zetterberg and in the 2012-2013 season, they lost in the playoffs to the Hawks. In their upcoming season, the Wings moved from the Central Division of the Western Conference to Division C of the Eastern Conference. The team hopes to continue their success into the new season and make their way to the playoffs once again.  appearance.
