Green Bay Packers

Go Pack, Go!

As the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the US, the Green Bay Packers are based in Green Bay, Wisconsin and are members of the NFC North in the NFL. Organized in 1919, the Packers are one of the oldest franchises in the NFL and are also one of the remaining “small town teams.” Wearing their green and gold jerseys, the Packers play at Lambeau Field which has been their stadium since 1975. In 1921, they joined the American Professional Football Association (APFA) which is now considered the NFL. Even though they're located in Green Bay, their fan base extends into and beyond Milwaukee. The Packers were founded in 1919 by Earl Lambeau and George Calhoun and by 1921, due to financial troubles, Lambeau found bankers to regain the franchise and they formed the Green Bay Football Corporation. Don Hutson was drafted in 1935 as the Packers split end/safety and he became the team's offensive weapon in all their games. With Hutson, they were able to take the team to three NFL championships. In the late 1940's, Hutson retired which spurred a decade of disaster for the Packers as they ended their 1958 season with a 1-10-1 record, the worst in Packer history.

This all changed in the next year when the Packers hired New York Giants assistant Vince Lombardi as head coach and general manager of the Packers. With this new management, the Packers were the team to watch in the 1960's with five championships within a seven year span as well as two Super Bowl victories. By 1968, however, Lombardi had left and the team was under the management of multiple head coaches, making the team unstable and not as successful as their previous years. By 1992, the team hired Mike Holmgren as the new head coach and soon after, drafted Brett Favre as quarterback. By 1996, the team had made a quick turn around and had the league's best record of 13-3 and were ranked number one in both their offense and defense. For the next ten years, the Packers were on a winning streak as they won division championships and made multiple playoff appearances as well as a Super Bowl championship in 2010 with Aaron Rodgers, who replaced Favre in 2008. In 2011, the Packers went 15-1, making it their best franchise record in the regular season. They continued their winning streak in 2013 but lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the first game of the playoffs. Holding the title for the Division championship for the past three years, the Packers have much competition within their league to be the next champions.

Green Bay had the better picks for the 2014 draft, adding on nine new members to their team. In the first round, they chose safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix from Alabama. Clinton shows to be the most valuable pick that the team made this year due to his past accomplishments and fast, athletic abilities to tackle, defend passes, cover, and catch. In the second round, they chose wide receiver Davante Adams from Fresno State whose most likely going to replace James Jones who left for the Raiders during the offseason. The other seven include defensive tackle Khyri Thornton from Southern Miss, tight end Richard Rodgers from California, offensive linebacker Carl Bradford from Arizona State, center Corey Linsley from Ohio State, wide receiver Jared Abbrederis from Wisconsin, cornerback Demetri Goodson from Baylor, and wide receiver Jeff Janis from Saginaw Valley. Fans all around the nation are preparing for the Packers to take on the Tennessee Titans for their first game of the preseason.
