Kansas City Chiefs

Based in Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Chiefs are a professional football team and are a part of the AFC West in the NFL. They were founded by Lamar Hunt in 1960 as the Dallas Texans and were also members of the AFL during that time. It wasn't until three years later that they moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs that we know them as today. Having similar colors as the Washington Redskins, the Chiefs take on the field in their red and gold uniforms. Arrowhead Stadium serves as their home field as well as their headquarters since its opening in 1972. The city of Dallas couldn't sustain both the Dallas Texans and the Dallas Cowboys, to the Texans decided to relocate to Kansas City. If it weren't for Lamar Hunt, the team wouldn't be where they are today. Hunt had originally asked the NFL for an expansion team to be located in his hometown of Dallas, Texas and after they refused his offer, he established the American Football League and started his own team of the Dallas Texans. With the establishment of the AFL, it created a rivalry between them and the NFL and in 1970, the two leagues finally merged.

As members of the AFL and after their relocation and name change, the Kansas City Chiefs were one of the more dominant teams in their league as they won the AFL championship as well a division championship. With their move, the Chiefs became the strongest team in the AFL and with their dominance in their league, it helped Lamar Hunt become a central icon and key member in the AFL-NFL merger. From their period of 1960-1969, the Chiefs won 87 games which was the most in AFL history. Their joining the NFL didn't prove to be beneficial to the team as they spiraled downhill without any playoff wins and soon after, fired their head coach, Hank Stram. By 1989, the team hired Marty Schottenheimer as their seventh head coach and with Schottenheimer, the Chiefs were able to slowly progress as they had a postseason victory in 1994. 1998 marked the beginning of another head coach and they have had six to date with their current coach as Andy Reid. With this upcoming season, many changes had been made for the team with a new head coach, new general manager, and new quarterback, Alex Smith. In hopes of returning to their glory days, the Chiefs are eager to start a new season and have a fresh start.

With their first round pick of the 2014 draft, the Chiefs chose defensive end Dee Ford from Auburn. With the team already having two defensive ends, Tamba Hali and Justin Houston, Ford will be the third defensive end. After dominating Senior Bowl week, the Chiefs are excited to see where this young rookies abilities on the field. Although they didn't have a second or seventh round pick, the Chiefs had five other picks which included cornerback Philip gaines from Rice, running back De'Anthony Thomas from Oregon, quarterback Aaron Murray from Georgia, guard Zach Fulton from Tennessee, and tackle Laurent Devernay-Tardiff from McGill. The team, along with their new players, will be starting their minicamp in the middle of June, all leading up to their first preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
