Los Angeles Kings

Added as one of the six teams that were part of the 1967 expansion, the Los Angeles Kings are based in Los Angeles, CA and are members of Division A of the Western Conference of the NHL. The team itself was founded in 1966 when Jack Cooke was awarded an expansion franchise for the city of Los Angeles. For their first 32 years, the Kings played their home games at The Forum and in the 1999-2000 season, they moved to the Staples Center where they have been playing at ever since. Their first two years went fairly well for a newly added expansion team but by the 1970's, the Kings weren't doing as well due mainly to poor management of the team. In 1979, however, the line combination known as the “Triple Crown Line” was formed which included Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, and Charlie Simmer. They went on to be the highest-scoring line in NHL history and led the Kings to many wins during their seasons together. The rest of the 1980's had its ups and downs for the team but in 1988-1989, the team saw a big addition. Then owner of the team, Bruce McNall, acquired Wayne Gretzky, who was the league's best player during the time.

He helped lead the team to many winning seasons and in 1992-1993, they had their first trip to the Stanley Cup final but lost to the Montréal Canadiens. In 1992, McNall was elected chairman of the NHL's Board of Governors and due to his free-spending ways, the Kings were faced with financial issues. They were faced with bankruptcy and McNall sold the team to Jeffrey Sudikoff and Joseph Cohen as well as resigning from his position with the Board of Governors. He eventually admitted to obtaining over $200 million in fraudulent loans from multiple banks and pled guilty to conspiracy and fraud. In 1999 with a new arena, new head coach Andy Murray, and new players added to the team, the Kings ended the season second in the Pacific Division. The next few years proved to be disappointing for them as they weren't able to make it to the playoffs for two consecutive years and finally in the 2011-2012 season, they had their first and only Stanley Cup championship. They defeated the New Jersey Devils and beat them in six games for their final victory. In their 2012-2013 season, the Kings lost in the Conference finals but placed second in the Pacific Division.
