San Francisco 49ers

"Who's got it better than us? Nobody!"

The San Francisco 49ers were originally founded as a member of the AAFC and later joined the NFL in 1949 after the two leagues merged. Dating back from 1946, the 49ers are located in San Francisco, California and are one of the first professional sports teams based on the West Coast. They play their games at Candlestick Park and have been ever since 1971. In 2006, reports were released stating that San Francisco would be building a new stadium for the 49ers in Santa Clara, California. In their red and metallic uniform colors, the 49ers won five Super Bowl championships in 14 years between 1981 and 1994. The team got their name to reflect the voyagers who would rush to the west coast when the gold rush had occurred. In their entire existence, the 49ers have won a total of five championships and had 25 playoff appearances.

In their more recent years, the Chargers assigned Trent Baalke as the permanent general manager for the team and named Jim Harbaugh as the 49ers new head coach. With these two changes to the team, they ended the 2011 season 14-4 but lost to the Giants in the Championship game in overtime. With the end of the 2012 season, the team fired kicker David Akers and signed on veteran Phil Dawson to replace him as the team’s kicker. For the upcoming 2013 season, BJ Daniels was signed as quarterback for the team as well as Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was drafted to the 49ers in 2011 and since then has taken the team to multiple wins, including playoff appearances and division championships in 2011 and 2012. Since the Raiders and Chargers share an intense rivalry, this also sparks a rivalry with the 49ers and the Raiders because of their crosstown rivalry. Finishing 12-4 in their previous season, they were able to enter the playoffs as a wildcard and beat the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field for the first game. With that win, they advanced onto their third straight NFC Championship game and defeated the Panthers. Their victory ended when the eventual Super Bowl champions, Seattle Seahawks, defeated them.

Analyst’s say that the 49ers have the boldest and strongest 2014 draft class. In the first round, they chose safety Jimmie Ward from Northern Illinois. Coaches have said that Ward has the potential to replace current safety Antoine Bethea and take control when put out to play. The second round pick went to running back Carlos Hyde from Ohio State. Their remaining ten picks are center Marcus Martin from USC, linebacker Chris Borland from Wisconsin, offensive tackle Brandon Thomas from Clemson, wide receiver Bruce Ellington from South Carolina, cornerback Dontae Johnson from NC State, outside linebacker Aaron Lynch from South Florida, defensive back Keith Reaser from Florida Atlantic, defensive back Kenneth Acker from SMU, defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey from Boston College, and running back Trey Millard from Oklahoma. With such a strong lineup put together, with both the offense and defense, the 49ers are ready to take on the Baltimore Ravens for their first game of the preseason.

The charismatic Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman was quoted last season as saying their NFL Playoff matchup against the 49ers was in fact, the “real Super Bowl game.”

Fans witnessed as the rivalry between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks was officially solidified this past season during the NFL Playoff season. Although historically, the rivalry can be traced back to the 2002 season, both teams stretches of mediocre seasons from 2002 - 2010 really dimmed the significance of the rivalry.

In 2011, USC coach Pete Carroll and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh took over as head coaches for the two teams, with Carroll becoming the Seahawks coach in 2010, and Harbaugh becoming the 49ers coach the following season. Both the San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks drafted young, agile quarterbacks with Seattle drafting Russell Wilson, and 49ers picking up Colin Kaepernick. Both teams immediately became playoff contenders and have since birthed one of the most awe inspiring rivalries in the NFL today. Both teams have claimed the NFC West Championship since Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh signed on as head coaches on their respective teams.

The battle out west is poised to set almost every record imaginable with two of the most ferocious fan bases in the league, the two are set to meet twice this season the first being at the San Francisco 49ers newly constructed Levis Stadium in the heart of the Bay Area on Thanksgiving Day, the next at CenturyLink field in Seattle on December 14th.

For the San Francisco 49ers, last years loss against the Seahawks ended on with a brutal blow when Richard Sherman was effectively able to prevent a game winning touchdown pass, and, the infamous speech afterwards when Michael Crabtree remarks caused a great deal of controversy. However shocking or controversial some may believe the remarks to have been, the speech effectively solidified what is now the NFL’s biggest rivalry for the upcoming 2014 NFL season.

The completion of the San Franciscos new stadium ends a historic era at Candestick Park, but also signifies the birth of a new one. With Pete Carroll at the helms of a the next chapter in 49ers history, it seems only appropriate that after one of the most climactic seasons ever for the “gold blooded” squad, that they start anew at the freshly minted Levis Stadium.

For the Seattle Seahawks, things could not be looking any better with their first NFL Super Bowl championship in the bag, they are poised to enter into the 2014 season with devastating force. As if playing at CenturyLink field wasn’t hard enough with the leagues most intense crowd shattering the very sound barriers of space and time, I can only imagine what a newly crowned Super Bowl Championship crowd is going to be like. Fair warning for our elderly fans, leave the ear pieces at home. You will not be needing them.
