Washington Capitals Schedule & Tickets
Located in the nation's capital, the Washington Capitals were founded in 1974 and are currently members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Often referred to as the “Caps,” they began playing their games at the Capitol Centre before relocating to the Verizon Center in 1997. In their first few seasons, the Caps did terrible, ending each season with a losing record and holding the record for winning only eight games in their inaugural season, the lowest ever in the NHL. Due to their lack of success, there was talk of the team moving out of DC and that's when fans started the “Save the Caps” campaign in an effort to keep the team in the nation's capital. The team didn't relocate due to two very important events in Caps history: David Poile was hired as general manager and he made one of the biggest trades in NHL history by trading Ryan Walter and Rick Green for Rod Langway, Brian Engblom, Doug Jarvis, and Craig Laughlin. With these new additions to the team, the Caps luck turned around and they had their first playoff appearance in 1983.
With this victory for the team, the talk of relocation ceased to be discussed and they stayed in DC. In 1988, the Caps had their very first division championship but ended up being beat by the defending champions, the Detroit Red Wings, in the Stanley Cup finals. It was in 1999 that the team was sold to a group of people headed by Ted Leonsis, who was AOL executive. With their new owner, they won back-to-back Southeast titles in 2000 and 2001 and in the 2001-2002 season, the Caps had their highest attendance in franchise history. For the 2004 NHL Draft, the Capitals selected Alexander Ovechkin first overall. As one of the key players on the team, he finished the 2005-2006 season with the most goals, points, power-play goals, and shots in the NHL. Within the next couple of years, he was awarded the Lester B. Peterson Award and the Hart Memorial Trophy for being the first player to win all four awards, including the Art Ross and Rocket Richard Trophies. With new head coach Adam Oates, the Caps are entering the season strong as the defending division champions and hoing for a chance to make it the Stanley Cup finals.
The Verizon Center is home to the Washington Capitals serving as their home venue for all preseason and regular season Capitals games.
